Snikkr Help: TrackMe
Help Home |  Site Home |  My Snikkr
A TrackMe is a temporary web page Snikkr creates for you, that allows you to share your location with people outside your Snikkr friends network. You just send a link to the TrackMe to anyone, via email or text message. The recipient opens the link in their web browser, and can see your current location, and an optional destination, in map and text format.

Each TrackMe has a duration, after which its web page will no longer be valid, so others can no longer see your location. Each TrackMe also has an optional destination, so others can see where you are headed.

On your way to a meeting with someone (who is not part of your Snikkr friends network), you may want them to see how far away you are. That way, if you are delayed, they will be able to tell just by looking at the TrackMe, rather that you having to call or text them to let them know. You can set the TrackMe to expire after the meeting, so they can no longer track your location.

You can create a TrackMe from either the Snikkr web interface (My Snikkr), or the Snikkr Mobile application.

One way to create a TrackMe, is to select a destination (like a favorite or a search result), and select TrackMe to Here from the menu. You then will be asked to specify the duration of the TrackMe. Once you have done that, Snikkr will create an email or text message containing a link to the TrackMe. Then you just address the message, add any other message you want, and send.

The recipient(s) of the message then just click on the TrackMe link, and can see a live map of your location in their browser. This map updates every sixty seconds, so they can see as your location changes, until the TrackMe becomes inactive. Once the TrackMe is inactive, it will no longer show your current location.

A TrackMe link is valid for two hours after it becomes inactive, so recipients will continue to see your last location as of the deactivation time. After the two hour period, the TrackMe link expires, and cannot be used at all.

For example, let's say you are meeting Sally at the Village Bakery. Here is what you would do from Snikkr Mobile:

  • Select the Village Bakery from your Favorites (either in the Favorites list or on the Map)
  • Select TrackMe to Here from the menu
  • Specify 30 Minutes as the Duration, in the dialog that pops up
  • Select Text as the way you would like to send this TrackMe
  • Snikkr then displays a text message with a link to the TrackMe
  • Add a comment to the text message, like "See you in a few minutes at the bakery"
  • Enter Sally's mobile number and hit Send
Sally then receives the text message.
  • Sally opens the text and clicks on the TrackMe link
  • Sally mobile browser opens, and displays the TrackMe page
  • The page displays a map of your current location, and distance and ETA to the destination (the Village Bakery)
  • If Sally is on her way, or already waiting for you, she can use the page to track your progress, and when you are likely to arrrive
  • The page refreshes automatically every sixty seconds, so Sally will always see your latest location
  • After 30 minutes (the duration you specified), the page will stop refreshing, and no longer show any new locations for you, even if the user refreshes manually
  • Two hours after that (or earlier, if you choose to delete the TrackMe), the link to the page will no longer work at all
You can send a TrackMe link to anyone with a web browser. You send the link via email or text message. The recipient then just clicks on the link to view it in their browser. There are desktop and mobile versions of the TrackMe page, with slightly different links. The mobile version of the TrackMe page is a little simpler, becuase often mobile browsers are not quite as up-to-date as desktop web browsers, and can't display all the information on the desktop version of the TrackMe page.
In both Snikkr Mobile and the web interface, there is a list of active and inactive TrackMes. In Snikkr Mobile, just select TrackMes from the main menu on the Map screen.

In the web interface, make sure you have Extas showing. The TrackMe tab is one of the tabs on the right side of the application.

You can Stop an active TrackMe at any time. Once you do this, the TrackMe will no longer show any new locations for you.
You can Delete any TrackMe (active or inactive). This will immediately delete the TrackMe, so that any links to it become invalid.
If you decide to Cloak yourself, your TrackMes will remain active, but your location will be not be updated while you are cloaked. Once you Uncloak, active TrackMes will once again display your current location.

In the TrackMe list, active TrackMes display green status circle. Inactive TrackMes are red. If you are cloaked, active TrackMes will display an amber "paused" status.
