Snikkr Help: Friends
Help Home |  Site Home |  My Snikkr
The Friends list allows you to see where your friends are and what they are up to. Each entry in the list shows you a headshot, the last known address of the friend, when that address was obtained, and your friend's status. Also, there is colored circle on the right of then entry (or the lower right of the headshot, depending on which platform you are using) which shows you your sharing status with that friend (see Sharing With Friends, below, for more information on what the colors mean).

Once you have added a friend (and they have accepted), you can share your status, location, and favorite places with them. You can also see where they are and what they are up to.

The friends list also shows you pending friend requests by you and for you, as well as any QuickShare requests (see Sharing with Friends, below).

Finally, the friends list also shows you recent Pings and Pongs, and lets you act on them (see Pings and Pongs).

At the bottom of the friends list, there is an Add Friend... button (there is also a menu item for this on the BlackBerry, and a button in the upper right of the screen for iPhone). This displays a dialog where you can enter a friend's email. As you enter the email address, Snikkr will try to show you any matching entries from your device's Contact list, to make data entry easier.

The screen also asks if you want to share location with this friend. If you want to always share your location with this friend, you can select this option. You can change this setting later, whenever you want. If you think you will only want to share your location with this friend from time to time, you can deselect this option. Later, as needed, you can QuickShare your location with this friend, or create a temporary TrackMe.

You can share just what you want with each friend. To let you quickly see what your current sharing status is with each friend, there is a colored circle ("sharing badge") on each entry in your friends list.

A green circle means you are sharing location, status and favorites with this friend.
A yellow circle means you are sharing status and favorites but not location with this friend.
A red circle means this friend is blocked, and you are sharing nothing with them, though they can still see your name and headshot.

If you change your own status to Cloaked, each sharing badge will be surrounded with a yellow border, meaning that while you are cloaked, you are not sharing your location with anyone (though you are still sharing your status). The inner color of the badge stays the same, so you can see what your normal (uncloaked) sharing level is with that friend.

A blue border around a friend's sharing badge means you are QuickSharing with them. When you QuickShare with a friend, they can see your location, status and favorites until the QuickShare has expired. You can QuickShare with someone by selecting them in the friends list, and then selecting QuickShare from the menu. You will be asked how long you want to QuickShare for, and whether you want Snikkr to ask your friend to QuickShare their location with you at the same time.

QuickSharing is very useful when you are meeting up with a friend, and want them to know where you are, or you need to know where they are, until your meeting or event is over.

Not all commands are available on all platforms
On the BlackBerry, there is a context menu (select an item in the list and press the trackball) and a full menu (use the BlackBerry's menu button). On the iPhone, you can double-top on a friend to bring up the "menu" of options. Friend and QuickShare requests, Pings and Pongs require only a single tap to show their options.

There are two types of requests: friend requests, and QuickShare requests. For each type of request you will see both requests by you and requests for you.

If you have made a request and there is no response yet, you can use the menu to cancel the request. If someone has made a request of you, you can use the menu to accept or decline the request. In the case of friend requests, you also get to decide if you will share your location with your new friend.

Requests will "time-out" after a while (about 30 mins for a QuickShare request, and a few days for a friend request), and disappear from your list.

The list of pings and pongs is similar to the request list. In the list you see pings from friends who want to know where you are, and you can see the pings you have sent to others. As with requests, you can always cancel one of your pings, if there is no reponse yet. And when someone pings you, you have the option to accept (send your location) or decline.

Unlike friend and sharing requests, pings will remain visible in the list for a few hours after you or your friend have responded ("ponged").

Pings with no response will also "time-out" after a while (about 60 mins), and disappear from your list.
